At a recent business forum organized by the Indonesian Ministry of Trade in Osaka, Japan, Japanese companies committed to importing 640,000 tons of biomass products from Indonesia, including palm kernel shells and wood pellets. Fajarini Puntodewi, Director General of National Export Development at the Indonesian Ministry of Trade, emphasized that demand for sustainable biomass use in Japan is rising sharply to support the country’s energy transition. Japan aims to achieve Net Zero Emissions by 2050 and requires all new passenger vehicles to be electric by 2035.
=> “This ambitious transition means that Japan’s industrial and automotive sectors will increasingly depend on renewable energy sources to reduce greenhouse gas emissions,” Puntodewi explained in a statement issued in Jakarta on June 15, 2025.

Biomass products from palm oil, such as palm kernel shells, empty fruit bunches, and oil palm trunks, have been recognized for their low greenhouse gas emissions. According to Ms. Puntodewi, using 1 ton of palm kernel shells as industrial fuel can reduce CO₂ emissions by up to 0.94 tons.

Currently, the production of palm kernel shells in Indonesia reaches about 14 million tons per year, of which around 35% is exported. Japan is currently the largest partner, importing about 4.5 million tons per year, and demand from the Japanese biomass market is expected to increase to 7 million tons/year by 2026.

Dikki Akhmar, Secretary General of the Indonesian Biomass Energy Producers Association (Aprebi), expressed support for the efforts of the Indonesian government in ensuring Japan’s acceptance of palm kernel shell products certified under the Indonesia Sustainable Palm Oil (ISPO) Program.
He also called for stronger promotion of the Timber Legality Verification System (SVLK), certifying biomass products such as wood pellets and wood chips for export.
